CoderDojo Gorey meets on Saturday mornings at Gorey Community School during term. Ages 8 to 17, every level from a first Scratch project to independent work, streamed by ability. 100% voluntary.
Running since 2013. 50–60 Ninjas attend each week. It's 100% voluntary (no fees are taken or requested).
What is a Dojo?
A Dojo is a coding club for young people. Ninjas (that’s what we call the young people who come) choose a project and build it, with a mentor nearby when they get stuck. There are learning pathways but no curriculum. Most of the learning happens when the code doesn’t do what the Ninja expects it to do.
Along with our own project guides, we also use project guides written by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which we have free access to. These are the same ones used by Code Clubs and Dojos worldwide.
The only rule at any Dojo. It covers everything else: how Ninjas treat each other, how mentors treat Ninjas and how we treat the room we borrow.
Free, always.
The Dojo and all activities in the Dojo are free, absolutely no hidden fees.
Ninja-led.
Ninjas create, mentors guide.
Local.
Parents, teachers and past Ninjas from Gorey and around north Wexford.
How a session runs
10:00
Sign-in at the door. Ninjas go to their room; a mentor helps first-timers find the right one.
First 10 minutes
Pick up where you left off or start something new.
The next hour
Build. Mentors circulate. Ninjas help each other, which is usually faster.
Last 10 minutes
Show-and-tell for anyone who wants it, then pack up.
11:30
Finish.
The team
Every adult in the building is Garda vetted and here voluntarily. Our Champion is Susie Clince. Eamonn McKenna and our mentors and volunteers keep the rooms running each week.
